Barteliver
Barteliver was originally built in the 1800s as a small set of farm buildings designed to thresh wheat and store seed.
Today, it’s a small cohort of Grade 2-listed residential buildings that capture the charm of history with a push towards modernisation. Hidden inside the fabric of the buildings are the touches needed to create high-performing energy-efficient homes.
We took a circular approach to demolition, repurposing old timbers and stone that needed to be removed. Timber joists from the 1900s, which were structurally sound, became newly formed A-frames for exposed vaulted ceilings. Stone and timber from cladded barns were cut and shaped to help form kitchens and outdoor finishes.
This approach saved the client money while also adding visual value and a story, showing how the old buildings have been transformed. This also helped to reduce construction waste and new materials, ultimately reducing the carbon footprint of the build.
In Barteliver, it’s easy to see our team’s attention to detail and the quality of our craftsmanship. For us, the secret lies in finding the value in what exists at the beginning of a project, and being aware of the important role we play in sustaining what’s around us as we create new environments for all.
